'Early Day Motion' is the term used to describe notices of motions given by
Members that are not generally expected to be debated. Effectively, the tabling
of an EDM is a device to draw attention to the issue, and to elicit support for
it by the means of inviting other Members to add their signatures to the motion.
Members may also table amendments to existing motions.
EDMs, amendments to them, and the names of signatories to both, are
circulated in the Vote Bundle, the daily working papers of the House of Commons.
These are published by The Stationery Office (TSO), but unlike Hansard
they do not have a wide circulation. Despite this, EDMs can oftehn attract a
great deal of publicity, and many people regard them as a gauge of
opinion.
